John’s Pass: A Paradise for Bottlenose Dolphins

Why is it that you are guaranteed to witness bottlenose dolphins frolicking and dancing in the water while on one of our sight-seeing dolphin tours in John’s Pass? Could it be the elaborate canals within the residential islands? Or is it the welcoming warm, shallow water with easy access to the Gulf of Mexico? Or perhaps, it’s the love and care and extra effort given to protect these precious animals.

For instance, in 2006, when the old John’s Pass Bridge was to be demolished, few people realize how much care when into protecting wildlife. Florida’s state regulations require a wide safety zone around demolition sites, where certain animals cannot enter within 30 minutes of an explosion. The same attention went into protecting John’s Pass marine life throughout the entire construction of the new bridge, completed in December 2010. Whatever the reason, we know that there are few places in the world that are as rich with marine life as our John’s Pass, and we are darn lucky to be here.

One scientist who concentrated her studies of bottlenose dolphins over a long period of time in John’s Pass identified 255 dolphins who passed through the area, about half of whom were considered “resident” dolphins while others just stopped by for a visit. Throughout her studies, she witnessed an “underwater soap opera” observing dolphins in their natural habitat – their struggles, their emotions, dolphins cuddling with one another, and more.

Marine life in John’s Pass is a special thing and a must-see for anyone visiting the Tampa Bay area. For additional information on our Dolphin Quest sight-seeing boat tours, contact us! It’s an experience you and your family will never forget!
